I entered the Society in 1952 at Los Gatos and left ten years later after finishing regency at St. Ignatius. I ended up teaching math and Latin at a military school in Los Angeles, then moved on to teaching philosophy at Los Angeles Pierce College from 1966 to 1998. Presently I am at Los Angeles Mission College.

I married too quickly, broke up and moved in with a hippyish student who became the inspiration for a trio of books I did on the contemporary witchcraft movement under the pseudonym of David Farren, then in 1982 settled down with my present wife. I have two children and a couple of grandchildren. Because of my son, who became involved with Irish Northern Aid (Noraid) as a student in San Francisco, I did the traveling and interviews that resulted in the book "IRA Man: Talking with the Rebels," published late in 1997.

I have frequently described myself as an ethnic Catholic, but I find it hard to pin down my beliefs. I do not really like the Church that much, but I often feel that same way about my country, and I prefer to be seen as a Catholic just as I prefer to be seen as an American. Both represent ideals that call on the best in our aspirations, and for that reason I cannot really reject either, as much as I find myself the critic.
